Travelling on the tube
Posted by James Burdett on March 26, 2008
I have to commute on a daily basis into central London. This is usually a reasonably pleasant experience, the tubes get crowded sure but by and large it is tolerable. Tonight however was an absolute nightmare. People were pushing and shoving and trying to squeeze into spaces that they were never going to fit into. They were behaving like utter animals. I let 2 trains pass me by as they were full and I wasn’t going to join the hordes of rude travellers pushing their way on come what may. Eventually I squeezed onto the third tube whilst various personages tried to barge me into the elderly lady who was in danger of being crushed. If this was a movement of livestock then there would be serious protests at the conditions of carriage. I think this is a sign of a failing transport policy, people are being cajoled and compelled to utilise a transport system that cannot cope with the swelling numbers. It is therefore essential that someone gets a grip and expands capacity on public transport BEFORE inventing policies to price people off the road. Urban mass transport is a hugely important issue, and in London at least it is not being dealt with correctly.

Too right! The few times I’ve been into London I avoid the rush hour it is particularly dehumanising.
Expanding population = lack of transport! Nightmare.

Well like I say normally, not too bad, today everyone had thrown their humanity away on the escalator!
