A Brand New Week

Posted by James Burdett on December 10, 2007

So here we are 10th December, a fortnight out from Christmas, a whole new week. I have a busy one ahead but will try to post at least once a day. What will this week bring, scandal for the government? another missing canoeist? who knows, that is the joy of life isn’t it. For me I have no need of blasting into space to explore the ‘unknown’, I can just get out of bed. I find the whole process of finding out what life has in store is a pretty amazing one, I tend to get to the end of the week and find that mostly it was mundane but even that is profound in the sense that none of it needs to happen. Obviously it is always different when something unusual happens, when you get to the end of the week and find that you have been bowled a curved ball at a certain stage. Nothing too curvy this week I hope, I have enough on!

I notice that the BBC Sport’s Personality of the year was last night, apparantly one by someone called Joe Calzaghe. I had no idea who he was, then I read that he was a boxer so it made sense why I have no idea who he is. I have a thing against boxing, I think the idea of a sport where the soul purpose is to hurt or cause pain to your opponent is vile. I know that there is somewhat more to it than that, but at the end of the day it is an organised fight. I would quite happily see boxing banned, not that that will endear me to many people. It is the successor to gladiators in the Colliseum and I just find it odd that people can derive any enjoyment out of watching two people beat seven bells out of each other. Maybe I’m too soft!

In other news, Wendy Alexander is still in post.

Equal Pay at Wimbledon

Posted by James Burdett on February 22, 2007

So Wimbledon prize money will be equal for both men and women this year. I have mixed views on this, whilst on the surface, unequal prize money looks unfair and unjust it can not be avoided that the men do play best of 5 sets and women best of 3. So consequently the women are getting paid the same as men for less work. It is however prize money rather than a salary so in that respect it doesnt matter how much ‘work’ is done for the reward. I do think that with the fitness levels displayed by women in the modern era and the speed of the game that maybe it is time to look at having womens grand slam tennis as best of 5 sets.
